The Deity Of Jesus

YOUR MESSAGE THIS WEEK

THE DEITY OF JESUS

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” John 1:1

Introduction:

The Deity of Jesus” also known as “The Divinity Of Jesus” is considered a central and non-negotiable belief within Christianity.   19th Century Theologian, John Gresham Machen defined the Deity of Jesus this way, “The Christian believes that there is a personal God, Creator and Ruler of the universe, a God who is infinite, eternal and unchangeable. So when the Christian says that Jesus Christ is God, or when he says that he believes in the “Deity of Christ,” he means that; that same person who is known to history as Jesus of Nazareth, existed before He became man, from all eternity as infinite, eternal and unchangeable God, the second person of the holy Trinity.”

John 1 delves into that truth to reveal to us the Divinity Of Jesus.

JESUS CHRIST IS ETERNAL:

Jesus existed before the beginning! “In the beginning was the WordJn. 1:1 When the beginning began, the Word was already there.” The Word predates time or creation. He did not begin to exist when the heavens and the earth were made. Much less did He begin to exist when the Gospel was brought into the world. He had glory with the Father “before the world was.”

Jn. 17:5. He was existing when matter was first created, and before time began. He was “before all things.”   Col. 1:17. He was from all eternity.

JESUS CHRIST IS A PERSON DISTINCT FROM GOD THE FATHER

John tells us that “the Word was with GodJn.1:1, (two distinct Persons) and yet one with HIM! This statement sets forth one of the most basic foundations of our faith – the Trinity. The Father and the Word, though two persons, have a union that cannot be described by words! Where God the Father was from all eternity, there also was the Word (God the Son), their glory equal, their majesty co-eternal, and yet their Godhead one.

JESUS  CHRIST IS GOD:

“The Word was God.” Jn. 1:1 Jesus is not merely a created angel, or a being inferior to God the Father, and invested by Him with power to redeem sinners. He is nothing less than perfect God–equal to the Father as touching His Godhead–God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds.

JESUS CHRIST CREATED ALL THINGS:

John also informs us that “by Him were all things made, and without Him was not anything made that was madeJn.1:3 So far from being a creature of God, as some heretics have falsely asserted, Jesus Christ is the Being who made the worlds and all that they contain. This makes it crystal clear that anything in the category of made, Christ made it. Therefore, Christ was not made, because before you exist, you can’t bring yourself into being! In regard to creation, “He commanded and they were created.” Psa. 148:5

JESUS CHRIST IS THE SOURCE OF ALL SPIRITUAL LIFE AND LIGHT:

The Word is the source of all life and light. The ancient Greek word translated “life” is “zoe”, which means “the life principle,” not “bios”, which means “biological life”. This life is the light of men, speaking of spiritual light as well as natural light. It isn’t that the Word “contains” life and light; He is life and light! Jn. 1:4-5. Anyone who has ever had spiritual life and light, they have owed all to Christ.

GOD BECAME FLESH:

Jesus Christ’s humanity is not an illusion.”…the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” Jn. 1:14 Paul says, “In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” (Col. 2:9) The fullness of deity dwells in Jesus’ bodily form. There is no diminishing of His deity, He is fully God and fully man.

GOD BLESS YOU.
